Japan Tune-up Series
The Headway Japan Tune-up Series, commonly referred to as the JT Series, is a series of guitars that have been individually tuned at the Deviser Guitars Workshop (WDG) in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, to the point that even professional guitarists can play them on stage without any modifications right out of the box. WDG also imports techniques from the Aska factory of the Japan-made Headway models to achieve the same high level of workmanship and cost performance as them.
Unraveling the JT tune-up process
We would like to introduce in detail what kind of adjustments are actually made on the Headway JT series. The performance of the JT series is born from the extensive adjustments that are made to each model.
Playability oriented nut and saddle treatment
Playability oriented nut and saddle treatment
Low chords are frequently used in acoustic guitar playing. The string action is tigthly adjusted at the nut for smooth chord changes, and the corners of the nut and saddle are treated smoothly for a beautiful, nice-to-the-touch finish.
Nut processing is a very important step of guitar tuning. A guitar with high string action at the nut not only makes it difficult to hold low chords, but also makes it difficult to lower the overall string action, making the guitar generally difficult to play. Also, guitars are designed so that the strings are angled from the fingerboard to the head in order to apply the proper tension to the strings. Therefore, the nut groove must be the perfect size for the string to slot into so that the beginning of the nut (fretboard side) and the end of the nut (headstock side) form a beautiful curve. A guitar without a beautifully slotted nut groove will not be able to produce its ideal sustain and resonance, and will have poor tuning stability. If the groove is too wide, the strings will shake when playing, and if it is too narrow, the strings will not rest at the bottom of the groove, causing loss of sustain and sound.
CloseRounded fret edges to
reduce stress when playing
By carefully rounding the edge of each fret by hand, using multiple files and sandpaper, the left hand movement has been made smoother. The left-hand can glide from from low frets to high frets without stress.
Fret treatment is an adjustment that directly affects playability. If there is an edge to the fret side when shifting positions while playing the guitar, it will catch in the hand and cause stress or even injuries while playing.
In order to concentrate on playing without stress, the fret side must be smooth and not catch in the hand. If you simply want to avoid catching in the hand, you can solve this problem by shaving the fret side at an angle, but this will cause the first and sixth strings to fall off. Therefore, we have rounded the fret side one by one to realize smooth and stress-free playability, while keeping the strings from falling off at the proper angle.
In addition, the carefully rounded fret sides are beautiful and enhance the sense of satisfaction when playing.
Fingerboard treatment that makes a difference in the finished product
The finish of the fretboard is the part that makes a big difference in the overall result. The fretboard is thoroughly polished and finished with oil. This is a natural finishing process for high-end models, but this extra step gives the fingerboard surface a pleasant, moist finish to the touch. This is one of the most important processes for the finished appearance.
String action adjustment for better playability
String height is a major factor in the playability of a guitar.
Each JT series guitar is carefully adjusted to the proper string action for an optimal result.
In addition to adjusting parts such as the saddle and nut, the neck is properly adjusted and the frets are aligned to achieve a low string height setting with an emphasis on playability.
(The treatment around the frets and the saddle nut in particular is a time-consuming and labor-intensive process.)
Preamplifier settings that
can be used as-is on stage
Equipped with an under-saddle FISHMAN®SONITONE preamp. The output balance is manually adjusted one by one so that the guitar produces a balanced plugged-in tone straight out of the box.
※Some models are not equipped with a preamplifier.
The preamp is a SONITONE preamp from FISHMAN®️. This preamp uses under-saddle type pickups, and by balancing the output when adjusting the saddle, it can be used on stage or in the studio as is after purchase. The preamp also has volume and tone controls in the soundhole, so you can easily adjust the volume and sound quality to suit the scene and support your playing. Since the output is from an endpin jack, both the preamp and output jack are attached to the body without any modification.
CloseFactory elixir strings
The JT series uses elixir strings as the factory strings, just like higher-end models. The general quality and sound quality of the strings do not change much from the time the strings are completed at the factory to the time they reach the customer’s hands ensuring long lasting quality.
Neck post-processing method similar to that of higher-end models
The body and neck are painted separately and then jointed using the traditional dovetail method. This method of jointing the body and neck after painting is called “post-processing” and the same processing technique is used as in Headway’s higher-end models. As a result, the sound quality has been improved, and a more solid sound quality is achieved.
Standard strap pin
Most JT series models come equipped with a strap pin on the neck heel. You can use the strap from the get go without the hassle of threading the strap through the headstock and without the cost of installing a pin yourself.
※Some models don’t come equipped with a strap pin.
Carefully selected workshops
Production workshops for these models are selected from among Deviser’s overseas partner workshops with the highest production technology, and quality control is performed by JT series specialists to ensure a high standard of performance.
