Retro-themed model overflowing with uniqueness! The birth of a new Japanese Red Pine guitar [Deviser Special Showcase 2025]

This year’s Deviser Special Showcase event is upon us! In this article, we will present the production of one of the event’s featured models, a Japanese Red Pine (JRP) Guitar. JRP guitars have been evolving every year, and this year we are renewing the body shape and specifications. We are preparing a new model that will bring out the charm of Japanese red pine even more!
The current state of the JRP Guitar project

For those who haven’t heard of it before, in 2017, the “Red Pine Guitar Project” was launched. This is an initiative launched in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, where Deviser is located, to utilize red pine trees that have been damaged by pine weevils to make guitars. Once damaged by the pine weevils, the pine trees were no longer able to be used for their original purpose of furniture and building materials due to the holes and stains the insects create, and many of them were just disposed of as through woodchippers (crushed into small pieces and used for fuel and similar purposes).

Knowing this situation, Deviser and the Aska workshop searched for a way to make use of it. After overcoming many challenges and failures, the SURF BREAKER, the first JRP guitar, was born, transforming the details of the wood into its personality and design.
Environmental-conscious Guitar Making
Today, our attempts to achieve “Sustainable Development Goals” have become more widely known, and even people who do not play the guitar are aware of our efforts. The popularity of Japanese timber (i.e., cherry, Japanese horse chestnut, etc.) in guitars has also helped, little by little, to expand the circle of interest in the felled Japanese Red Pine issue and our passion for making guitars.

As a symbol of this, a red pine tree was planted at the Deviser Technical Center, which was completed last year. Through our guitars, the company continues to communicate the ideal of craftsmanship and its appeal.
Sneak peek into the production site of the new model!

Now that you have learned about the appeal of the JRP guitars, it is time to introduce the new models that will be unveiled at the event! We will take a closer look at the new body shape and specifications from inside the workshop.
Retro-themed!
The new model also features the same “German Curve” around the perimeter of the body as the SURF BREAKER, which has come to be known as the iconic red pine guitar. We aimed to create a design that matches the knots and stains of red pine without any sense of discomfort.

The Bizarre style body shape also harkens back to the conception of the first JRP guitar when it was developed. The retro look is eye-catching, as if it were discovered in a decades-old garage.
Practical specifications from the player’s perspective
Contrary to its appearance, the controls and specifications are updated and up to modern standards. We aim to create a player-oriented design that is built around being used on stage.
Aska Quality Production Process

The Aska Workshop has been working with Japanese Red Pine since this project took off many years ago, and it is a material different from common wood, so only professional craftsmen with this much experience with the material can get the most out of it in a handmade construction process.
Aged processing done with individuality
For the color, we went with a metallic-type color that is not often paired with our Japanese Red Pine guitars. Additionally, Inheriting the concept of the first generation, the guitars will be aged with a vintage feel to integrate the knots, stains, and worm-eaten holes that characterize red pine into the design in a natural and cohesive way.
